About The Artist

Emily Kerr lives in Alaska with her husband and three children. Her current body of work focusses on the complexities of Motherhood- the light and the dark.

She plays with the balance of control and chaos allowing the paint to drip and using charcoal and pastels for finer details. Emily has taken inspiration from Käthe Kollwitz’s work for many years. She works on paper and canvas with charcoal, graphite (wet and dry), gouache, watercolor, pastels, acrylics and acrylic ink.

Emily has been exploring motherhood through art since she was pregnant with her first child in 2018. Her current work shines a light on co-sleeping, breastfeeding and the dark depths of postpartum depression and anxiety. She gives voices to the otherwise hidden dark and heartbreaking parts of being a mom. Emily’s paintings explore the coexistence of grief and joy, dark and light, pain and beauty.
